It’s morning and I’ve burned through the midnight oil with Paulo Nutini, a most beautiful Scot. Week two of the semester and I can finally exhale. Great Profs, important material but painful and counterintuitive for me. My brain actually aches from attempted data storage. If I didn’t have family, music and art I might slip over the edge. Unfortunately, the real climb lies ahead in a number crunching nightmare on ice. But not this most excellent day. Today I invite everyone to nosh, engage in snappy repartee and celebrate our existence on the planet.

Janis’s voice is tightly woven throughout my life soundtrack. Ever present, empowering me to slay whatever dragon haunts my keep. However, she speaks to me most in this season. High summer in Bluegrass country is not for the weak, ill prepared or uninitiated. Certain items are simply necessary for survival in this exhausting environment. Uppermost on that list is access to bodies of cool water with awesome music floating above them. Her rendition of Gershwin’s classic is always first on the playlist. Sustenance for a walk on the face of the sun wrapped in a steaming towel. Armed only with an ice-cold watermelon from Jigg’s and cheap sunglasses.
“Lorraine’s Song” was written by Grayson Capps for the soundtrack of Love Song for Bobby Long. The movie was based on the novel Off Magazine Street by his father Ronald Everett Capps.
